Antisemitism in Local Authorities

East Riding of Yorkshire Council

International Definition of Antisemitism

The Council has told Campaign Against Antisemitism that it has adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism.

The Council said that the Definition was adopted on 29th July 2020.

As part of its response, the Council provided its Corporate Equality Plan 2020-2024, minutes of a Cabinet meeting on 3rd March 2020 and minutes of a Council meeting on 29th July 2020. which show that the Definition was adopted.

There is no reference to the examples in the Cabinet minutes, Council minutes, accompanying Corporate Equality Plan 2020-2024 or Freedom of Information response and therefore we cannot assess with certainty whether the Definition has been adopted in full.

Campaign Against Antisemitism considers the examples to be integral to the Definition, without which an adoption is not complete. In a statement on 7th August 2018, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance reiterated the integrality of the examples to the Definition.

The Council has told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “The HRA has been adopted via inclusion in the Council’s Corporate Equality Plan 2020-2024…The Equality plan was recommended to the Council for approval by Cabinet on 3rd March 2020…and this was approved by the Council on 29th July 2020…”

This information was obtained after Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on 31st July 2021, to which the Council responded on 27th August 2021.
