Antisemitism in Local Authorities

Lewes and Eastbourne DIstrict Councils

International Definition of Antisemitism

The Council does not appear to have adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism.

The Council said that the Definition was adopted on an unknown date in September 2020 but it has not provided evidence to support its claim.

The Council has told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “The definition was built into the Equality Action Plans and adopted by Cabinet leads in September 2020…”

There is no reference in the Council’s most recent Equality and Fairness Policy or its Equality Objectives 2022 to 2026 to the International Definition of Antisemitism.

We have searched the Council’s website and the public domain but have not found any reference to adoption of the International Definition of Antisemitism.

This information was obtained after Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on 10th August 2021, to which the Council responded on 31st August 2021.

Incidents

No incidents relating to the Council’s officials or councillors have been reported to us, however we recognise that antisemitism is chronically underreported and it is possible that there are incidents that have not been reported. To report an incident, please contact us.
