Ireland adopts International Definition of Antisemitism
Ireland has adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism.
This is a welcome – if confusing – decision, given the scale of antisemitism in the country and the rhetoric of Irish leaders over the past year, to the point that Ireland’s Jewish community opposes the presence of the Irish President at a Holocaust commemoration event.
It remains to be seen whether Irish leaders – and wider Irish society – demonstrates any change in their attitude toward Jews as a result of this adoption.
Britain was the first country in the world to adopt the International Definition, something for which Campaign Against Antisemitism and Lord Pickles worked hard over many meetings with officials at Downing Street. Ireland joins a growing list of national governments and public bodies to use the Definition.
