Every year, we reach millions of people through our work in the media and social media. We have become a go-to source of information and comment for journalists, tens of thousands follow us on social media, hundreds of thousands read our website, and our research is widely relied upon.
The Communication and Research Officer has four principal roles:
- Writing journalistic-quality articles about antisemitism, from crime to politics, including investigative pieces;
- Managing our social media channels with our Digital Communications Designer;
- Working with our academic volunteers and polling companies to help explain the nature of antisemitism in Britain, trends and possible strategies for addressing it; and
- Providing information and research to journalists.
You do not need to have direct experience in each of these areas, but you do need to be able to demonstrate a proven ability to produce persuasive, well-presented, SEO-friendly written material. You will receive training in areas where you do not yet have expertise and will be supported in your work by both a full-time Communications and Research Manager, to whom you will report, and a part-time Digital Communications Designer.
Writing articles: A portion of your work will consist of writing and editing articles about antisemitism in Britain for publication on our website where it will be read by hundreds of thousands of people, including journalists. You will have an excellent eye for the salient points of a story and an ability to quickly grasp the technicalities of the cases we work on, eloquently and simply explaining them to a non-expert audience. Sometimes you will be writing about matters reported in the media, quickly adding our own comment and reportage, but you will also work with our volunteer teams on pieces of an investigative nature or exposing new cases of antisemitism. In addition to writing articles, you will also produce precise and well-argued information about antisemitism more generally and about our work. You will also be working with a volunteer team of writers, whose work you will edit.
Managing our social media: Our social media reach is already significant, but you will lead us to new successes, supported by a part-time Digital Communications Designer who will produce graphics and video. Through social media, you will engage the public by running positive campaigns and ensuring that we react with alacrity to developments. In addition to creating long-form content, you will lead the creation of memes and viral content to engage our target audiences, adapting your creative work by measuring reach and evaluating success against strategic communication goals.
Explaining research: Our research has made front-page headlines. You will support our volunteer academics by helping to devise research projects which highlight antisemitism and demonstrate how it can be fought effectively. Our academics will generally lead research efforts, but you will coordinate and support them, and you will assist in ensuring that the final output is appealing, easy to understand and effectively disseminated.
Building media relationships: Campaign Against Antisemitism has exceptional reach with national online, print and broadcast media. You will be responsible for helping to devise our proactive media strategy and managing our relationships with key journalists, providing them with bespoke information and research quickly and reliably whenever they seek our help.
The successful candidate will be creative, meticulously organised and precise, even under pressure. Your work will require you to prioritise effectively, respond fast, think analytically and write and communicate persuasively and eloquently. You will be a fast learner, who can rapidly develop practical solutions and operate with total discretion. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working as part of a large and growing team.
