About Us
Campaign Against Antisemitism’s litigation continues to break new ground in the fight against antisemitism.
We have brought private prosecutions, judicial reviews, regulatory complaints, and actions for libel, and we were the complainant in the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s statutory investigation into antisemitism in the Labour Party.
Having established the effectiveness of litigation in forcing action by the authorities and bringing antisemites to justice, we have now decided to increase the number of cases that we bring each year, especially in relation to antisemitism on campuses and online.
The Role
Our legal team covers a broad range of areas of law and an extremely broad range of work.
The team analyses cases of antisemitism to determine the appropriate criminal or civil legal strategy and pursues litigation in criminal private prosecutions, public law challenges and civil discrimination claims.
The team also deals with all the in-house legal questions facing the charity, ranging from charity law to employment law to defamation law.
We are looking for a Paralegal who can bring their legal skills, together with their dedication to this cause, to the fight against antisemitism.
Experience:
It is essential that you meet the following criteria:
- Graduate LLB or the GDL;
- Experience working in a legal or office environment;
- Strong attention to detail, and excellent writing and communication and organisational skills; and
- Commitment to combating antisemitism.
It is also desirable that you have:
- Experience working as a paralegal or in any role that involved managing a high volume of casework; or
- Either experience working in an in-house environment (particularly in the charitable sector) or experience working in public or criminal law.
Nature of the work:
We are seeking a paralegal who can support our legal team in a broad range of innovative strategic litigation (involving case analysis, legal research, managing cases including maintaining case file documentation, drafting or revising legal documents, and helping to manage a team of legal volunteers and external lawyers), as well as providing general in-house legal advice.
The work will involve:
- Managing the triage process for incoming cases (including analysing the merits of each case under the guidance of our legal team);
- Assisting with case management to ensure that casework progresses and supporting the work of our legal volunteers;
- Managing our network of solicitors, barristers and other legal professionals who assist our work;
- Drafting legal correspondence, pleadings, witness statements, applications and regulatory complaints, under the guidance of our legal team, and conducting legal research; and
- Reviewing and updating internal policies and standard contracts under the guidance of our legal team.
You will work closely with our legal team, Director of Investigations and Enforcement and volunteers in pioneering legal cases, bolstering CAA’s litigation work to ensure that antisemites are held to account and victims receive justice.
The team:
You will work closely with:
- Our legal team, supporting them in case triage, case progression, drafting, internal compliance and contract management;
- The specialised volunteers within our investigations and enforcement units, who are accustomed to preparing evidence and seeing cases through to their conclusion, often doggedly, over years through multiple appeals;
- Our pro-bono lawyers whose expertise is drawn from the full range of the fields above and who practise at the top of their specialisms;
- Access to legal databases and materials on a basis to be agreed and budgeted each year; and
- Operational, communications and administrative support from full-time colleagues working with you in our London office.
Your personal characteristics:
You will be meticulously organised and precise, even under pressure, and operate with total discretion. Your work will require you to prioritise effectively, respond fast and think analytically. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working as part of a large and growing team. Above all, you will be passionate about fighting for equal treatment for Britain’s Jews.
