Alleged arson attack attempted on north London synagogue

Finchley Reform Synagogue

Investigations and a manhunt for suspects are underway following another alleged antisemitic arson attack.

According to the Metropolitan Police, two people approached Finchley Reform Synagogue at around midnight on Wednesday 15th April, where they threw a brick and two bottles supposedly containing petrol towards the building. The incident was reported to the police by synagogue staff members at around 08:30am.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt at the attempted attack on the synagogue, which is a major communal institution and place of worship, and its regular programming is continuing amidst heightened security precautions.

No arrests have yet been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

This distressing news comes just weeks after a horrendous arson attack on four Hatzola ambulances parked outside a synagogue in Golders Green, also in north London.

A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “Attacks on Jews and community institutions in this country just keep escalating. They burned ambulances. Now they are trying to burn down synagogues. Thankfully nobody was hurt in this latest attempt, but what – or whom – will they try burning next? We are grateful to the police for the investigations that they are conducting and call on anyone with information to assist as a manhunt is underway.

“But it really is past time for the authorities to wake up to the scale of extremism in this country – which their inaction on hate marches and surging antisemitism has incubated – and address root causes rather than simply wait for the next incident.”
