The University does not appear to have adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism.
The University told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “…After consideration it was recommended that the University should adopt the short definition of the IHRA working definition of anti-Semitism [sic] excluding the illustrative examples…”.
Campaign Against Antisemitism considers the examples to be integral to the Definition, without which an adoption is not complete. In a statement on 7th August 2018, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance reiterated the integrality of the examples to the Definition.
This information was obtained after Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on 18th November 2021. On 6th December 2021, the University responded.
As part of its response, the University provided an extract of minutes of a meeting of the University Council on 23rd February 2021, which confirmed adoption of the Definition without the illustrative examples.
The University told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “We can confirm that our response to your request sent on the 6th of December 2021 remains valid and our position remains unchanged. There is no additional data to supply in response to your request.”
This information was obtained after Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on 21st June 2026. On 15th July 2026, the University responded.
When asked on 12th August 2020, Newman Students’ Union confirmed in its response on 6th October 2020, that it had adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism, for inclusion in its Code of Conduct, on 24th September 2020.
