Campaign Against Antisemitism has made a submission to the Department for Education’s independent review into antisemitism in schools and colleges.
The review, led by Sir David Bell, was launched in March and is expected to be completed by the autumn.
Our comprehensive submission made several recommendations, focused on:
- Classroom education and curriculum;
- Staff and training;
- Internal policies and accountability; and
- Regulatory oversight.
The recommendations cover:
- Classroom discussion of sensitive topics
- Audit of textbooks and making teaching resources available to parents
- Religious Studies and other curriculum matters
- The interaction of Holocaust education and contemporary antisemitism
- Lessons on use of social media
- Appropriate training for teachers and other school staff
- Prevent
- Senior leadership and professional conduct in schools, including duties of political neutrality
- Adoption by schools of the International Definition of Antisemitism, including all eleven examples in full and without amendment
- Application of the Definition in antisemitism cases
- Recording of antisemitism incidents and reporting to the local authority and police where appropriate
- Inspection of schools and accountability
- Transparency in how stakeholders can escalate complaints
- Putting existing safeguarding guidance on a statutory footing
- Ensuring specialist antisemitism representation on relevant Department for Education panels
- Requiring the Secretary of State for Education to update Parliament on progress
