Antisemitism in Local Authorities

Reading Borough Council

International Definition of Antisemitism

The Council has adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism in full, including all of its examples.

The Definition was adopted on an unknown date in December 2019.

The Council has told Campaign Against Antisemitism that it does apply the Definition in disciplinary matters.

The Council has told Campaign Against Antisemitism: “The effective date is December 2019.  The Leader and Chief Executive decided that wasn’t necessary to have a formal motion, there was no conflicting policy in place to change, and it was within the Chief Executive’s remit to direct as the definition was in accordance with the best practice that we would always seek to apply.”

This information was obtained after Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on 3rd August 2021, to which the Council responded on 10th November 2021.

Incidents

No incidents relating to the Council’s officials or councillors have been reported to us, however we recognise that antisemitism is chronically underreported and it is possible that there are incidents that have not been reported. To report an incident, please contact us.
