Antisemitism in Local Authorities

Suffolk County Council

International Definition of Antisemitism

The Council has adopted the International Definition of Antisemitism in full, including all of its examples.

The Definition was adopted on 20th February 2020.

The Council has told Campaign Against Antisemitism that it does apply the Definition in disciplinary matters.

The Council told Campaign Against Antisemitism that: “… the IHRA definition has been adopted by Suffolk County Council (SCC). This was at the SCC Strategic Equalities and Inclusion Board meeting on 20 February 2020… The following was noted in the minutes of that meeting: All local authorities have been asked to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism by central government. Suffolk County Council (SCC) has had discussions with the leader and senior officers who think this is an important issue…It is noted that SCC has adopted the IHRA working definition of antisemitism…If anyone would like more information, please visit the IHRA website where you can see the working definition of antisemitism…”.

This information was obtained after Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 on 15th August 2021, to which the Council responded on 29th October 2021.
