Incidents

  1. On 13th December 2012, in response to an account which stated: “The financial and economic masters (ie not politicians) are more powerful than Govts”, Philip Rose tweeted: “Agree same in US – Rothschild Zionists control us-WE must stop arguing R+L fight together”.
  2. On 15th December 2012, Mr Rose tweeted: [a] “Fabians a part of the elite communitarian agenda — Rothschild-Zionist clean sweep. [b] Perhaps real division [is] liberty or [New World Order]?”
  3. On 12th February 2015, Mr Rose shared a post on Facebook which asserted that “Cultural Marxist techniques” (which were described as “broadly based on the Frankfurt School” and identified as “a form of mind control to control free speech, to undermine public opinion, to weaken the defenses of democracy”) were being “used to destroy western civilization and bring about a ‘One world government’ and a Socially-Marxist society built on repression, poverty and war.”
  4. On 21st June 2015, Mr Rose shared a video on Facebook decrying immigration, multiculturalism and political correctness in Sweden. Mr Rose commented: “Goodness – Common Purpose or what? We know how Sweden is the testing ground for neo-Zionist policy. We are well on the way here in the UK.”
  5. On 9th September 2015, Mr Rose shared a video on Facebook entitled: “The Illuminati exposed by Muammar Gaddafi”. The video consisted of a lengthy encomium to the late Libyan dictator towards the end of which [circa 54:00] it was stated: “The Libyan central bank is state owned and unlike ALL banks in the west is not owned by Rothschild and issues debt-free money…[thereafter followed claims that Libya had not been responsible for the Lockerbie bombing, but had, rather been falsely incriminated by the US] …One of the first acts of the Libyan ‘rebels’ was to create a new central bank to one that was owned by Rothschild, just as ours in the west are. The Rothschild family are estimated to own over half the world’s wealth. Rothschild-owned banks create money out of thin air and sell it to the people at interest. This means we never have enough to pay back what is ‘owed’. So we and our unborn children are made debt slaves to Rothschild banking interests. Unlike our leaders Cameron, Obama, Sarkozy et al, Qaddafi refused to sell his people out, Libya was debt free! Are you beginning to see why Qaddafi gets this [apparently rapturous] response from his people?… and who is behind the NATO bombing of a free and sovereign people?”
  6. On 11th June 2016, Mr Rose shared a video on Facebook of a speech given by Vladimir Putin. He commented: “Why are our corrupt leaders relying on making us believe Russia is an enemy? Our major foes are within – treasonous Cameron, Corbyn and their friends, Obama, Clinton and their zionist controllers…”
  7. On 23rd June 2016, Mr Rose tweeted a link to an article entitled: “Europe’s ‘refugee’ crisis and the Kalergi plan for white genocide”. The article discussed a supposed plan to effect the “systematic destruction, via demographics, of European civilization and its people”, allegedly based on the writings of the Austrian politician Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi, inspired by “a kind of Jewish supremacism” which would see the Jews as “a future leader-nation” in a Europe wherein the ‘indigenous’ populations had been replaced through miscegenation.
Mr Rose also shared this article on Facebook.
  8. On 20th August 2016, Mr Rose shared a video on Facebook entitled: “Why individuals are killed by the Illuminati Part One George Carlin”. The video included footage of the late American comedian George Carlin criticising the US government, US social trends and what he described as “the big club”, followed by a segment showing [circa 6:48] the antisemitic conspiracy theorist David Icke opining that “we are in a country and in a world that is run by unbelievably sick people” and that “the chasm between what we are told is going on and what is really going on is absolutely enormous”. This, in turn, was followed by a segment asserting that Freemasons are enacting an agenda for world domination which entails “eliminating opposition to their cause”. A subsequent montage linked images showing the 9/11 attacks, American support for Israel, and suggestions that Islamic jihadists might be the creation of Israel and the US, before returning to footage of George Carlin [circa 14:23] inveighing against “the owners of this country” over which was superimposed a scrolling list of private and governmental groups and companies which began with Goldman Sachs, later including The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and ending with the Rothschild banking group. The Video concluded with a segment suggesting that Mr Carlin, who died of heart failure, had in fact been assassinated.
Mr Rose commented: “Whatch [sic] and learn”.
  9. On 13th November 2016, Mr Rose tweeted a link to a video from the notoriously conspiratorial Infowars site entitled: “Soros Foundation Funding Race War/Total American Collapse”, which claimed that “George Soros hasn’t given up and is still pushing for an all out race war and completely destroying the United States.”
  10. On 18th November 2016, Mr Rose tweeted a link to an article entitled: “The Kalergi plan: The real reason that the European Union is so hostile to Donald Trump.” The article suggested that the European Union was based on the writings of Austrian diplomat Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi, who supposedly envisaged European society as “run entirely by the global elite over a completely powerless population” via a process of mass-migration. The article’s featured image showed Coudenhove-Kalergi alongside the flag of the International Pan-European Union against a background of the Star of David.
It should be noted that the text of the linked article which Mr Rose originally tweeted has more recently been replaced (although the original date, authorial attribution and comments section are unamended). Its current content suggests that the so-called “Kalergi Plan” was in fact the creation of antisemitic Nazi propaganda.
Mr Rose also shared this article on Facebook.
  11. On 23rd January 2017, Mr Rose tweeted a link to a video entitled: “BREAKING: GEORGE SOROS’ SECRET PLANS JUST LEAKED! LOOK HOW HE’S PLANNING TO STOP TRUMP.” The video purported to expose links between George Soros and numerous groups involved in the anti-Donald Trump WomensMarch, and the video’s presenter began by describing Mr Soros thus: “He’s like a vampire; he’s going to live forever and continue to plague us with his sorcery.”
  12. On 1st February 2017, Mr Rose tweeted a link to an article on the highly conspiratorial Natural News site entitled: “How George Soros and Hillary Clinton almost conquered the world (but were stopped just in time)”. The article (which appeared shortly after the inauguration of Donald Trump as US president) alleged: [a] “Clinton was aided in her effort by some major backers, including billionaire George Soros, who has funded organizations throughout the United States and Europe with the goal of creating and supporting a planetary order run by himself and a few select “elite” – a group that Clinton already belonged to.” It further describes how “George Soros and Clinton Inc. were nearly able to declare ‘Mission Accomplished’ on their vision of establishing an opaque ‘New World Order’”, before finally asserting: [b] “Clinton and Soros’ plans were evil, but thanks to Trump and his “unique” presidency, they have been thwarted.”
  13. On 11th June 2017, Mr Rose tweeted a link to a video showcasing a talk given on 10th March 2017 by the antisemitic conspiracist David Icke (whom Mr Rose described as “insightful”) entitled: “World War 3, Trump, Rothschild Zionism & More…”
Whilst the link shared by Mr Rose is no longer available, a video with the same title remains on YouTube.
  14. On 22nd November 2017, Mr Rose tweeted a link to a YouTube video entitled: “Deep state take down, WW3, Indictments, Zionist info war with Robert David Steele.” The video’s description explains that its interviewee, would discuss “…the Zionist Info war and agenda… the Zionist agenda to start WW3 and the need to refocus our countries [sic] efforts on the needs of the nation.”
It should be noted that Robert David Steele appears to be a former CIA officer who now peddles conspiracy theories, being interviewed by such notorious promoters of antisemitism as Veterans Today and David Duke.
  15. On 25th January 2018, Mr Rose tweeted: “Of course we know it is Soros and his cronies who show they are a ‘danger to the world’ the sane, fair, free world that is…”
  16. On 25th March 2019, Mr Rose tweeted a link to an article entitled; “The genocidal Kalergi plan to destroy the indigenous nations and peoples of Europe.” The article asserts, inter alia, that [a] the Rothschild and Warburg families were involved in a plan to carry out the “deliberate ethnocide of the indigenous, mostly Caucasian race of the European continent”, and that this plan “should be run for and by the racial and spiritual supremacy of ‘blood aristocracy and Jewry’”. The article featured an image of the banker and philanthropist Jacob Rothschild accompanied by the words: “The bankster family Rothschild adopted and funded the plan to annihilate Europe”. The article further asserts that “Banking groups such as the Rothschilds are alleged to have been funding both sides of wars and other major world events and revolutions since at least the bloody French revolution, profiting from such events whatever the results”; claims that “The Rothschilds today own at least 80% of modern day Israel – the land that was ‘given’ to them as if by magic” and that “The six sided hexagram star seen on the flag of Israel is not the star of David as we have been led to believe – it is an occult satanic symbol going back to Babylonian times and adopted by the House of Rothschild in recent centuries”; alleges that [b] “Slurs of ‘anti Semitism’ are thrown at anyone trying to rationally and fairly criticise and debate issues to do with Zionist/supremacist related extremism”, whilst further asserting that [c] “a great deal of modern Israelis or those today calling themselves Jewish aren’t even Semitic [sic]…[but] are believed to be of Khazarian Turkic ancestry who converted from paganism to Talmudic Judaism in and around the 8th or ninth century AD…this is one example of how trigger words and terms are misused and manipulated by the mainstream media in order to push their own agenda and narrative, and at the same time shut down any criticism and healthy open debate.” (It should be noted that a linked report from The Times of Israel supposedly citing a statement by the Israeli government was, in fact, a satirical blog post — there being a tradition of placing hoax articles in newspapers during the festival of Purim — which was apparently taken at face value by the article’s author.)
Mr Rose also shared this article on Facebook on the same day.
  17. On 21st May 2019, Mr Rose shared a post on Facebook which included a seventeenth-century German image purporting to show Jews committing ritual child-murder. The image bore the captions: “Why does this image even exist?” and “Adrenochrome”. Further text beneath the image read: “Because harvesting the adrenaline filled blood of children for the ADRENOCHROME has been a practice of secret societies for centuries. There’s a reason thousands of children go missing every day even in a society with cameras on every corner.”

Analysis

Campaign Against Antisemitism’s analysis is that Mr Rose’s actions and statements amount to breaches of the International Definition of Antisemitism and qualify as antisemitic discourse according to our methodology.

By citing conspiracy theories about the Rothschild family, which promote the trope that a Jewish family dynasty secretly controls governments and banks [1] [2a][5][13][17a]; by sharing a video in which the Jewish financier George Soros is described as a “vampire” who would “plague” the world forever with his “sorcery” [11], and otherwise alleging that he is involved in “evil” or “secret” plans to achieve world domination [9][12b][15]; by describing US politicians as “foes…within” who have “zionist controllers” [6]; and by sharing a video which claims to expose a “Zionist agenda to start WW3” [14], Mr Rose was “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.”

A dominant strand of nationalist right-wing rhetoric is the idea that white, European, Christian culture is being deliberately undermined through immigration promoted by Jews. This conspiracy theory (and particularly the far-right so-called “Great Replacement”, “White Replacement” or “White Genocide” theory, which was cited as the motivation for the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue massacre and the 2019 San Diego shooting) is often expressed in antisemitic terms, with Jews in general, and Jewish individuals such as George Soros, being accused of orchestrating it. Mr Rose’s fellow former UKIP parliamentary candidate Jack Sen actively subscribed to such a theory. Thus, by sharing a video decrying immigration and multiculturalism and deprecating  it as “neo-Zionist policy” [4], he was also “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective…”

The so-called “Kalergi plan” is an increasingly popular variant of the far-right “White genocide” conspiracy theory which is specific to Europe. It asserts that the Austrian politician Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi, who was an early exponent of European integration, devised a plan to replace the white population of Europe with non-white immigrants, which would be carried out with the assistance and for the benefit of supposed Jewish “elites” such as the Rothschild family. By sharing an article which asserted that this supposed plan was inspired by “a kind of Jewish supremacism” [7]; by sharing an article which linked this supposed plan with Jews through the image of the Star of David [10]; and by sharing an article which unambiguously linked this supposed plan with the Rothschild family and Israel [16], he was disseminating material which was further “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective…”

Whilst the term “Illuminati” originally referred to a short-lived Enlightenment-era fraternal organisation, since the early nineteenth century it has been associated with antisemitic conspiracy theories, with subsequent versions alleging that the “Illuminati” infiltrated the ranks of European Jewish bankers during the nineteenth century. These theories variously assert that the bankers / Jews / “Illuminati” were behind the Bolshevik Revolution and the creation of the Federal Reserve system in the United States, later forming the influential American think tank Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently what the far-right refers to as The New World Order, under whose control institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union are imagined to be. The Rothschild family are so often cited as being members of the supposed “Illuminati”, that the two seem to have become intrinsically linked in the popular imagination. Moreover, it should be noted that the antisemitic conspiracy theorist and author David Icke has referred to the notorious Tsarist-era antisemitic forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion (which is thought to be based on the earliest antisemitic theory involving the supposed “Illuminati”) as The Illuminati Protocols when citing them in his books. By sharing videos in which the “Illuminati” are variously alleged to have organised the overthrow of the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi and the assassination of the American comedian George Carlin, including both explicit [8] and implicit references [5] to groups associated with Jews, he was again disseminating material which was “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective…”

The so-called “New World Order” conspiracy is a nebulous conspiracy theory, mired in antisemitic tropes, in which shadowy organisations are alleged to be plotting the overthrow of democracy and the establishment of a one-world government. By tweeting that “[Rothschild-Zionists]” were involved in an attempt to establish a “[New World Order]” [2b]; and by sharing an article in which it was asserted that the Jewish billionaire philanthropist George Soros was involved in a conspiracy with former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to establish an “opaque New World Order” [12a], he was yet again disseminating material which was “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective…”

The term “cultural Marxism”, which is frequently evoked in right-wing discourse to disparage progressive trends, is intimately associated with antisemitic notions of secretive Jewish cabals conniving at world domination by according disproportionate significance to the role of Jewish philosophers and theorists in early twentieth-century left-wing thought and movements and particularly the work of the so-called “Frankfurt School”. It has become one of the most cited antisemitic conspiracy theories of the far-right, in which Jews are accused of conniving at the destruction of what are perceived as the building-blocks of ‘traditional’ societies, namely, the family, religion, private property and nation-states. It was cited as motivation by both the Norwegian far-right mass-murderer Anders Breivik and by the perpetrator of the Chabad of Poway Synagogue shootings in San Diego. By sharing a statement which asserted that “Cultural Marxist techniques”, as supposedly devised by the theorists of the Frankfurt School as a way of undermining western society, were being used by the European Union to bring about a “One World Government” [3], he was further “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective….”

Although the theory that Ashkenazi Jews descend from a Turkic people in Khazaria who converted to Judaism was first propagated by a well-meaning Jewish intellectual, the idea has been repeatedly debunked by historians and geneticists. However, the Khazaria myth became an antisemitic canard of the far-right, used to deny the connection between European Jews and their Biblical ancestors, and now also has currency in left-wing antisemitic discourse. By sharing an article in which it was asserted that “great deal of modern Israelis or those today calling themselves Jewish aren’t even Semitic [sic]”, but are, rather, so-called “Khazars”, and that the term “antisemitism” was thus being “manipulated” in order to “shut down criticism and healthy open debate” [17c], therefore, he was once again disseminating material which was “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective….”

By sharing an article in which it was asserted that accusations of antisemitism are used by Jewish groups to shut down criticism of Israel, Zionism and the supposed illegal occult activities described by the author [17b], he was disseminating material which was deploying the so-called ‘Livingstone Formulation’, by accusing Jews who cite evidence of antisemitism of lying, conspiring or having deceitful motives in doing so, when there is clear evidence that there have been breaches of the International Definition of Antisemitism. This further constitutes “making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews…” under the definition.

The theory that the American political and Hollywood elite “harvest” the chemical compound adrenochrome from the blood of tortured children formed part of the so-called “Pizzagate” conspiracy and is a staple element of the multi-layered “QAnon” conspiracy which succeeded it. The latter is recognised as containing many elements which mirror longstanding antisemitic tropes, particularly the belief that a global cabal is secretly engaging in ritual child-sacrifice. Mr Rose’s Twitter history shows that he has been following ‘Q’ since 2017. By sharing an explicitly antisemitic image supposedly showing the ritual murder of children by Jews, with accompanying text which asserted the factual basis of the image [17], he was “Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g. claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel)…”

Outcome

On 8th June 2017, Campaign Against Antisemitism reported that it had put the matter in [2] to Mr Rose, and that he had denounced the charity as “the real racists”, pointing out that his paternal grandmother was Jewish and that, as not all Zionists are Jews, “Rothschild Zionists” is not a racial term. He reportedly added: “I am not familiar with the International Definition of Antisemitism but from what you write it looks like a catch-all for anyone who may question anything about Jewish people or institutions.”

We do not know whether disciplinary action has been taken by UKIP against Mr Rose, and at the time of writing, on 22nd October 2020, we have no evidence of any.

In November 2020, Campaign Against Antisemitism put this matter to both Mr Rose and UKIP, but did not receive a response.
